Five people were killed on Saturday after a Toyota Innova veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The SUV with six occupants was on its way to Jammu from Banihal and the accident occurred near Digdaul around 9.45 am, when the driver hit an oncoming car and lost control of own vehicle.

Officials, including police, CRPF and Ramban Civil QRT, attended the crash site as the car rolled down 300 metres from the highway into the Bichlari river.

Three people were pronounced dead on the scene and two others were rescued. One of the people succumbed to injuries on the way to the district hospital. The sixth person’s body was entangled in the wreckage of the vehicle.

The Innova was entirely mangled and lying in the river.

Territorial Army members together with Ramban police, CRPF, and local volunteers continued their search and rescue operation at the crash site.
