At least 53 people were killed and dozens injured following a truck accident on Thursday in southern Mexico.
The accident took place in southern Chiapas state when a truck carrying over 100 people overturned afternoon near Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
The crash is among the deadliest involving migrants of recent times, and it follows the death of 13 migrants in a crash on the U.S. border in March this year.
Officials believe that the truck was traveling at excessive speed and then flipped over when it was rounding a sharp curve, with the trailer carrying the migrants then striking into a pedestrian bridge and construction nearby.
The Civil Protection Service said about 58 people had been injured.
“My solidarity with the victims of the traffic accident,” wrote the governor of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandón, on Twitter. “I have given instructions to provide prompt attention and assistance to the injured. Responsibility will be determined according to the law.”
