79-year-old man dies after being hit by car in Huntington Beach, California

Juan Martinez Tovar, 79, of Santa Ana, was killed on Wednesday morning after he had been hit by a car on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, California.

Huntington Beach police said Tovar was taking a walk in the traffic lane just south of Brookhurst Street at about 5:10 a.m.

He was hit by a 2013 Toyota Matrix that was moving towards north on Pacific Coast Highway, Sgt. Matthew Austin said.

Police identified the driver of the car, which had no other passengers, as a 59-year-old man from Newport Beach. He stayed at the site of the accident and was helping with the investigation. He was not injured.

The investigation is continued and is being carried out by the Huntington Beach Police Department Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team. Anyone with details of the incident is recommended to contact Traffic Investigator Doug Demetre at (714) 536-5670.

An estimated of 3,259 fatal crashes took place in California in 2018.
