The recent reports state that the German Brand, Audi has decided to dismiss the plans to produce the BMW i3 rival, the Audi A2 EV. Audi’s decision is yet another proof that the market for pure electric vehicles may be much smaller than predicted. GM Europe recently dropped plans for an EV version of the Opel Adam city car, while sales of the Nissan Leaf have failed to meet targets in the U.S.
The car was scheduled to go into production in 2015, as a plug-in hybrid and as a pure electric vehicle as a rival for the BMW i3. The company says that it has learned lessons from the A2 project, and thus they will implement the learned things in their upcoming models. The model, during 2011 Frankfurt Motor show had used a sandwich floor construction, similar to the original Mercedes A-Class, which would provide room to store the lithium-ion battery pack. And the company had promised a 125-mile range from the battery pack, with four hours necessary to recharge.
As a quick reminder ot you all, when the car was showcased, it weighed only 1,150 kg (2,530 lbs) and it featured an electric motor providing 116 HP (85 kW) and 199 lb-ft (270 Nm) of torque, enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 9.3 seconds and a top speed of 93 mph (150 km/h).
Well lets hope the company does come out with something that would actually be a rival to other makes.
