Chevrolet says Corvette ZR1 won’t happen

by SpeedLux

Chevrolet Corvette C7 engineer Tadge Juechter recently told AutoBlog that the company has no plans currently to develop a more powerful ZR1 version to sit on top of the recently unveiled Z06.

Chevrolet had introduced the Corvette Z06 earlier at NAIAS and many of them were guessing whether there’s still room for a range-topping ZR1 version. But the speculations have been almost ended as C7 engineer Tadge Juechter said that such a model is not being developed since it would bring modest performance gains at the expense of significant investments in design, testing and certification.

The Z06’s development stage hasn’t finished yet but Chevrolet says that the car has what it takes to outperform the C6-based ZR1. The 2015 Corvette Z06 will be powered by a new LT 6.2-liter V8 turbocharged engine with an output of atleast 625 hp (466 kW) and 635 lb-ft (861 Nm) of torque working together with a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The company has not given any details about the pricing but according to the report from AutoBlog it will kick off from a little over 100,000 USD. Juechter also said that those who were able to purchase a C6 ZR1 will have the money to buy the new 2015 Z06.
