California authorities are trying to find an SUV that drove off a cliff in California on Monday, as well as possible passengers inside it.
The car was seen driving off a cliff at Gray Whale Cove State Beach, 18 miles south of San Francisco, by a witness.
A six-hour investigation for bodies was abandoned Monday, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Taylor Bacon stated, and was stopped as of Thursday afternoon due to a lack of visibility and deadly water conditions in the area.
“The risk outweighed the possibility of finding somebody,” Bacon informed USA TODAY. “This is a unique situation and we’re working with partner agencies to help discover the vehicle.”
The California Highway Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, and Cal Fire are all finding for the car and any passengers the car might have.
The witness spotting was corroborated by footage taken from a dashboard camera, some car debris and tire marks on the sand surrounding the cliff’s edge.
CHP officer Bert Diaz stated that investigators have been searching for missing persons and missing vehicle reports, but haven’t discovered anything.
“We don’t know if it was a criminal act,” Diaz stated. “We don’t know if it was intended or if it was an accident.”
Crews will carry on the search once there are better conditions.
