General Motors will start producing 1.5 million face masks a month at its plant located in Toluca, Mexico at the end of April.
The automaker is aiming for 9 million masks over six months to help in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus.
Some masks will be donated to public hospitals of Mexico while others will be used for workers and distributors, the automaker’s Mexican unit stated.
The automaker said in March it would start making up to 1.5 million masks a month in the United States, after declaring that it would start to suspend operations in North America because of the coronavirus pandemic.
About 5,847 people in Mexico have been confirmed as being infected with the coronavirus. The virus has killed 449 people in the country.
