A man purposefully encountered an Auburn police officer with his vehicle Saturday afternoon on Millbury Street, stated police.
The officer is presently being dealt with at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Auburn Police stated it began with a home burglary Millbury when a lady came home to an unusual car in her driveway and a male in her house. Authorities stated the suspect, Matthew Ostrander of Worcester, ran away, but the woman got the description of this car, including the license plate.
Ostrander was leading police on an automobile chase and officer Luis Santos was putting out stop sticks at Millbury Street and Route 20 when Ostrander swerved and hit him, informed police.
The automobile then hit the stop sticks and stopped even more up the street, stated police.
“The suspect left the car and started reaching into his coat and asking the officer, who had him at gunpoint, to shoot him,” stated Chief Andrew Sluckis.
Sluckis stated things could have ended in a different way, if not for great restraint by his department, with one of their own currently injured.
The officer managed to get Ostrander into custody making use of pepper spray after a battle, stated cops.
Ostrander has a prolonged criminal history and is being held on 100,000 bail.
Neighboring cops departments have been sending their condolences to Officer Santos. Cops said he is a veteran of the force. He’s struggling with a concussion, a broken right leg and a seriously left knee injury, but he will live.
