The 6.3L V8 naturally aspirated engine from Mercedes-Benz that has powered AMG models through the years is giving way for a more powerful and more fuel efficient V8 biturbo 5.5L powerplant.
Mercedes-Benz puts the spotlight on the new V8 5.5L engine as it puts it under the hood of a styled S63 AMG that pays homage to a 1971 classic the 300 SEL AMG. The new powerplant has direct injection, biturbo charging, and spray-guided combustion.
The standard version of the V8 twin turbo engine can give out about 544 horsepower and a peak torque of 590 pound feet. Boosted by the performance package of the AMG, the numbers are up to 571 HP and about 663.8 lb-ft of torque.
The outgoing 6.3L naturally aspirated V8 gives out 525 HP and a torque of 465 lb-ft. The new engine is no surprise more powerful and more efficient than its older sibling.
The new V8 will be coupled with a 7-speed automatic transmission and will use a Start-Stop system from Merc. The 2011 S63 AMG will have a fuel mileage of 22.4 mpg or about 10.5L for every 100 km. The savings on fuel is about 25% when compared to the older engine that has a mileage of 14.4L per 100 km.
The carbon dioxide emission is also significantly lowered by 28.5%. It only releases 246 grams of CO2 for every kilometer on the road.
The V8 biturbo can bring the S63 AMG from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The top speed is limited electronically to just 155 mph or about 250km/hr. When you have the performance setup, step on the pedal and your speedometer will be hitting 100 km/hr in just 4.4 seconds. The AMG upgrade also gets the top speed boosted to 300 km/hr or 186 mph.
The current version of the S63 AMG gets the 0 to 52 mph in 4.6 seconds while the S65 that sports a 6.0L V12 biturbo hits 100km/h in a matter of 4.4 seconds with its 612 HP engine.
The 5.5 biturbo V8 will debut under the hood of the new S63 AMG before the end of 2010. It will eventually be used for the other AMG models.
