A southern Indiana reserve sheriff’s deputy has died following the incident after his car crashed into a trailer that traveled into his lane of traffic, Indiana State Police said.

Monroe County Deputy James A. Driver, 38 of Spencer was replying to a call in his Dodge Charger squad car with emergency lights and sirens activated about 4 p.m. Monday on State Road 45 southwest of Bloomington when he hit the trailer being pulled by a pickup truck driven by Christopher A. Derr, 22, of Monticello, Illinois, according to police.

Derr attempted to stop but lost control, police said. The impact took Driver out of his squad car, which then rolled off the roadway. Driver died at a hospital in Bloomington.

Derr and his passengers were not injured. Investigation into the incident is continued.
