We can definitely expect more Tesla cars of different kinds coming in the near future. This is the promise that was reiterated by the company’s chairman, Elon Musk.
The Model S is expected to roll out by 2012 and Tesla is locked on getting the sedan to their target consumers right on time. The car will have a sticker price expected to be just half of the tag of the Roadster or about $50,000 including some tax credit from the federal government.
As the 4-door Tesla rolls out of dealerships, the production of the Roadster will cease after 2012. A successor is expected to take the spotlight before 2014. A crossover is also in the pipeline.
Musk also hints that 4-wheel drive will be part of the overall characteristic of the future Teslas. The Model S will boast of a 300-mile range, safety ratings of 5 stars, and the configuration to allow battery swaps in less than a minute. The car will also feature a high tech 17-inch screen and big amount of space for storage.
With the introduction of the new products, the chairman of Tesla also promises better affordability of their vehicles. In contrast with the Roadster, the third product on the line will be affordable to the mainstream market.
These teasers were revealed by Musk when he received an award during a ceremony at the Detroit Athletic Club.
Tesla has inked a deal with Daimler to supply chargers and batteries fo the next Smart electric vehicle. The company will also provide the electric technology needed for the development of the A-class of Mercedes-Benz in Europe.
