Two people were killed and four others were injured on Sunday after a giant eucalyptus tree fell on California’s Highway 101 near Gilroy in California.
Officials responded to a report of a traffic crash at 3:25 p.m. on southbound Highway 101.
At the scene, officials discovered a tree had crashed toward the roadway, falling onto a Toyota Prius with a driver and at least 1 passenger in the car.
“The tree came to rest on top of the Prius and remained elevated several feet above the ground, blocking all lanes of US-101 S/B,” the officials said.
The driver of a black GMC Sierra struck the tree, followed by the driver of a blue BMW.
The windshields and cabs were damaged in two vehicles.
The driver and a passenger in the Prius had moderate to major injuries.
The driver of the GMC Sierra was killed and one passenger in the BMW was killed, while the driver and the other passenger had major injuries.
The initial investigation indicated neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the crash.
California Highway Patrol investigated the crash.
