Two California residents died and a 4-year-old girl was injured on Saturday afternoon after an impaired driver from Brownsville swerved throughout the lanes of U.S. Highway 20 west of Sweet Home, then back again, crashing head-on with another car.
Officials responded to the two-vehicle crash around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday on Highway 20 near milepost 23 which took place when an eastbound red Mazda 3 driven by a 33-year-old Brownsville man swerved throughout the lanes of traffic onto the westbound shoulder, then back into the eastbound lanes, crashing head-on with a silver Nissan Versa driven by a 79-year-old identified as Carl Curtis, of Huntington Beach, California, who tried to avoid the oncoming car.
The driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 4-year-old female passenger in his car was hospitalized with critical injuries.
Curtis and his 73-year-old passenger identified as Yvonne Levy, 73 were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Highway 20 was closed for about four hours.
