A car crash on Highway 29 near Lake Wissota, Wisconsin killed two people on Monday morning.

A 38-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son, both from rural Cadott, died after the woman’s vehicle crossed the median from the westbound lanes on Highway 29 and hit a semi-trailer traveling eastbound. The woman and her son were taken out onto the roadway from the vehicle and were pronounced dead near the crash site.

Names of the victims haven’t been revealed pending notification to their families.

According to Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, the crash took place near mile marker 83, or just west of 190th street, on Highway 29 at 11:01 a.m.

Traffic was backed up for over a mile before road shutdowns were put into place at County Highway X heading east on Highway 29.

After more than five hours after the vehicle crash, crews were still working to clean up the roadway.

The driver of the semi, a 39-year-old man from Maiden Rock, was unharmed.

The driver told officials that the vehicle crossed over the median and struck the left front of his semi, causing the trailer to overturn. The cargo of wheat grain spilled throughout the eastbound lanes of Highway 29.

Wisconsin State Patrol, the Chippewa County Coroner’s Office, and the Chippewa Fire District, as well as the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office participated to resolve the incident.

Highway 29 was resumed almost six hours after the crash.
