The Russian automaker known as AvtoVAZ unveiled the “El” Lada electric car at the 2012 Moscow Auto Show on Wednesday, finally joining the global bandwagon of automakers which make the EV (Eletric Vehicle) range.
History-
AvtoVAZ states that this car is like “A first in the history” of their company, they also mentioned that the El Lada will be used as taxi’s in the Russian Caucasus. And for those who dont have an idea what Caucasus is, let me tell you, Caucasus is a geopolitical region at the border of Europe and Asia, and situated between the Black and the Caspian sea. It is home to the Caucasus Mountains, which contain Europe’s highest mountain, Mt. Elbrus. Politically, the Caucasus region is separated between northern and southern parts.
Specifications-
The El Lada EV is based on the automaker’s non-eletric Lada Kalina, which are often found on the russian roads. The model has an extra-oridinary styling but adopts an undisclosed electric powertrain which enables the car to hit a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph) and travel up to 150 km (93 miles) on a single charge. When the battery is fully charged, it can be replenished in approximately 8 hours. Acceleration zooms to 100 km which takes about a staggering 12 seconds!
Last November AvtoVAZ Vice President for Technical Development Yevgeny Shmelyov said the company plans to produce 100 El Lada electric cars in 2012.
But there are obstacles to the operation of electric cars in Russia, according to the Autostat Analytic Agency – the low winter temperatures in the most regions of the country are the main hindrances, a lack of recharging infrastructure and a lack of component production too. All the special components the El Lada are imported, the analytic agency said.
And batteries for the new car will be produced in a new plant, which is currently being built near Novosibirsk, Russia. Until the plant is done the batteries will be coming from China.
