Many fans have been drooling over the 5.5-liter biturbo V8 making its way under the hood and across the lineup of some of the most menacing Mercedes-Benz vehicles on the road. The 5,461cc engine in the new Mercedes is a normally aspirated version of the twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that powers the new CLS63 AMG and E63 AMG models.
The new 2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG will be revealed in September at the Frankfurt motor show, which means we can expect the new car in showrooms by early next year–at the latest
It seems that this AMG version of the latest SLK will keep its “SLK55 AMG” title and will deliver a peak output of 422 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 398 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. That means a full 62 horsepower more than the outgoing model’s 5.4-liter V-8.
The engine (codenamed M152) weighs, without the turbos, 412 pounds. It features an innovative F1-inspired AMG Cylinder Management shut-off system. This system allows the engine to run on just four cylinders under partial loads to help economy. Beside this, the new model will also feature a new sports exhaust system with two separate rear silencer flaps. The flaps stay closed at low revs below 2000rpm, and progressively open as the driver applies more throttle for a louder exhaust note.
This September, at Frankfurt Motor Show, next to 2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG a new diesel version of the SLK should also debut.
