City cars are fast becoming the car of choice for many young professionals. Once seen as the only option for a first time driver. We are now faced with such a wide variety of options for these smaller cars that they suddenly appeal to the masses. They have sleek looks, sporty exteriors and fiery engines. All engulfed in the small package with big personalities. For this reason, we are seeing many car manufacturers launch or update their city car range. Making this car market varied and appealing to all. But what about those old faithful car brands and models? The names we have heard, for what feels like years? Those cars are getting the update treatment to, and one I wanted to observe more closely was the Renault Clio.
Launched back in 1990 the Renault Clio has been an iconic car over the years. A supermini city chic car, the French brand are proud to relaunch this faithful car year after year. The Clio has had astounding critical and commercial success, and it has been rated one of the top selling cars in Europe consistently. Many critics would say that the Clio has much to do with restoring Renault’s brand.
Over the years we have seen many facelift models launch, but the fact remains the same. The Clio is a small car with a driven price point. Many people would associate it with the budget market, which is why I thought I would explore the car in more detail. Is it the city car with it all? Let’s find out.
Engine size
What I think is great about the Clio is that the engine sizes vary quite a bit. This makes the Clio range more appealing to the masses, instead of focusing on the small car market. Of course, you have the entry level 1.2 petrol engine. Both economical and responsive. Perfect for the first time or young driver. Not forgetting the sports turbo charged versions for those wanting that extra umph. Making this one of the most extensive ranges available in the supermini market. The range also includes a reasonable diesel engine making this a unique alternative to a bigger hatchback car. Especially for someone who covers a lot of mileage.
Who does it suit?
With Renault covering the budget end of the market now with sub brand Dacia, the Clio has a more fashion-led approach in regards to looks and styling. Making this a comparable choice with the MINI, Ford Fiesta and the Citroen DS-3. This means that this supercar is no longer for someone who has just passed their test. This car will now suit a young professional through to being a perfect second car for a family. It has the appeal.
What about the sports luxe version?
With nine models in the range, you would be wise to consider all your options before picking out a favourite. However, as the Clio is now focused on the looks and performance side of things the ones to look out for would be the Dynamique S and the Sport Nav ranges. The Sports Nav Lux inparticular with the diamond cut alloy wheels looks stunning. It will certainly get those heads turning as you drive past. In regards to the performance side of things, the engine you will find in the Sport Nav range is 220 Turbo EDC engine with an automatic gearbox. However still offering an impressive 47mpg. Which is immense considering that this sort of range can be expected by some of the other cars in the range on less of a performance engine. If you like that sports car look and drive, then the Clio Sport range will not disappoint.
Exterior looks
As mentioned earlier, the sub brand Dacia is now taking care of the budget friendly options. Meaning the Clio has an opportunity to outshine the rest as only a French brand could. With incredible chic and styling. This is where the front end grill has had special care and attention taken to make sure it provides road presence and style. The exterior side skirts offer a sporty look. The lowered suspension on some of the models gives this car an extra edge over some of the others in it’s class. Available in a range of matte and metallic paint finishes there is something for everyone. There is also the opportunity to upgrade the size and style of the alloy wheels. While also considering additional extras like a body kit.
Interior finish
The interior finish has also had some extra attention, and you can see the difference. Some of the range offer a navigation system as standard with a 7 inch screen making a focal point to the interior. The sports like seats are comfortable and supportive, focusing more on the dark, sleek black trim. Some models include a carbon trim, giving the sports versions that extra edge. Safety and security aspects
The Clio still maintains a high safety rating. However, there are some great added features like Hill start assist, deadlocking and keyless entry. ABS and EBD are as standard, along with Emergency brake assist, tyre pressure warning, front and side airbags. To name a few of the features.
How economical is the car?
The car has a range of petrol and diesel engines. The 1,2 petrol engine, which is the entry level has a recorded miles per gallon of 51.4mpg. However, the diesel engines have an incredible fuel consumption of 82 mpg, and the engine capacity of a 1.5 makes it an appealing engine to all. The economy results are excellent across the whole range, even the sport turbo charged engines are offering just over 40 miles to the gallon. You can check out fuel consumption statistics on websites like http://www.fuel-economy.co.uk/calc.html.
Overall
As Renault celebrates 25 years of the Clio, it’s safe to say the car is still turning heads and will be around for some time. It’s an iconic city car. With it’s fashion-led styling, it’s sleek interior finish, and economical engines it simply ticks all the boxes. Above all, it’s still a reasonably priced car to insure and with a great price point. Renault has injected the Passion for life in this latest facelift version.
