Hybrid variant of the upcoming Range Rover not available at launch

by Ron Grant

Jaguar Land Rover will not have the hybrid version of the Range Rover together with its compact sibling. The car manufacturer explains that about 100 engineers are focused on the project and reports that they are making good progress in the development of the hybrid Range Rover.

The top executive of Land Rover said that the work on the hybrid vehicle involves big investments and their focus will be geared towards larger vehicles.

The company is pushing for the Range Rover Sport while its hybrid variant is going through a series of tests. The aim is to have a range of at least 20 miles while top speed during an all electric mode should be around 50 miles per hour. Engineers estimate the carbon dioxide emission to be under 100 grams per kilometer conservatively speaking.

The new technology that will be implemented will add about 200 kg to the Range Rover. It will make use of an 8-speed ZF transmission with the electric motor but it will not have a torque converter. It will also carry a 160L lithium ion pack of battery. The vehicle still has a lower kerb weight because of fresh weight service.
