A Bertie County deputy was taken to hospital after his cruiser caught on fire during a crash on New Year’s Eve in North Carolina.

Bertie County Sheriff John Holley says one of his deputies was replying to a call around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night on Highway 308 near Lewiston Woodville when he went around a curve, hit a shoulder, and ran off the road before he struck a tree. Holley says the weather played a role in the crash.

Holley says the deputy’s vehicle caught fire. He added that a witness driving behind the deputy pulled over and helped him out of the car.

The deputy was admitted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville with injuries, although the extent of the injuries is unknown.

The name of the deputy has not been revealed to public as of yet.
