On Sunday, July 26, 2011, Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins set a new record time for the ascent up Mt. Washington’s hillclimb and now we have the official video from the event.
This is the first time in ten years when the Mt. Washington Auto Road played host to the Climb to the Clouds. Back in 2010, Travis Pastrana had helped drum up interest by recording a time of 6:20.47, a time that was quicker than the official record run of 6:41.99. That time was laid down by Frank Sprongl back in 1998, and was still the official fastest time despite Pastrana’s fast dash up the hill. This time, David Higgins’ run, however, was official an it was great.
Higgins took to the famous course with a SportsCar-prepped Subaru WRX STi rally car equipped with BFGoodrich RC01 Rally tires. Driving this car, Higgins managed to finish the hill climb in only 6 minutes and 11.54 seconds setting a new world record considering that’s about 30 seconds faster than Frank Sprongl’s previous record from 1998. Beside this, David Higgins also beat the unofficial record of 6:20.47 set by Travis Pastrana last year.
