Three killed after driver hits tree in Halifax County

Three people were killed in a crash in Halifax County, Virginia on Tuesday morning after a car hit a tree.

Police say the crash took place in the 4000 block of James D. Hagood Highway.

The driver of a vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree.

The driver of the car, identified as Francisco J. Chavez, 19 of San Benito, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Passengers identified as Victor H. Mata, 20 of Mission, Texas and Joaquin Chavez, Jr., 20 of San Benito, were also pronounced dead at the scene.

None of them were using seatbelt.

Virginia State Police investigated the crash.
