There’s has been information flying high about a high-performance Toyota GT 86, but the car’s chief engineer opines that the company is considering both turbocharged and supercharged engines.

Speaking to a reporter the Engineer said work has already begun on the upgraded GT 86 and the company plans to introduce a high-performance version later down the line. He didn’t confirm when it would arrive but he said the company is planning superchargers, turbochargers and electric motor assist system that could bring additional gains that forced induction does not. He also said an electric motor could deliver substantial low-end torque without loosing the required fuel efficiency, emissions / throttle response.

Any strong hybrid system would be welcome but he suggested the car could adopt lightweight components to help lower the increase. He also added the model could have altered aerodynamics to tackle any changes in weight distribution since TRD has already developed underbody fins and plates that can be employed to change the dynamic balance of the car.
