Two people were killed on Wednesday morning on Highway 101 outside Shelton after a vehicle crossed the centerline, hitting a dump truck carrying a load of gravel, which then struck another vehicle.
The crash was reported at 7:33 a.m.
The vehicle, a 1991 Mazda pick-up truck, was driven by a 66-year-old Shelton man, who sustained injuries in the crash and is suspected of being impaired.
His passenger, a 69-year-old Shelton woman, was not injured.
The suspect driver was booked into the Mason County Jail for investigation of two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of driving under the influence.
The driver of the 2011 Peterbilt dump truck, identified as Duane M. Martin, 58, of Olympia, was pronounced dead at the scene. Martin was not using a seatbelt.
The driver of the 2006 Toyota, identified as Rita L. Lyman, 66, of Shelton, was also pronounced dead at the scene. It is not known if Shelton was using a seatbelt.
The roadway was blocked for over 6 hours due to the crash.
Washington State Patrol is investigating the incident.
