Volkswagen XL1 also known as the 1-litre car was designed to be able to travel 100 km on 1 litre of diesel fuel (240 mpg-US).

The XL1 is produced with lightweight materials, featuring a streamlined body and a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 48 hp TDI engine, a 27 hp electric motor and a 5.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that in the production model averages even better fuel economy than the concept – an impressive 0.9 L/100km (261.3 mpg US), while being able to travel up to 50 km (31 miles) on purely EV model.

The production will be very limited with just 250 units to be made with pricing starting at a very high €111,000 ($146,000).

The XL1 will be available only in Europe and recently the first XL1 was delivered to a customer in Germany finished with onyx white exterior and a titan black / pearl gray interior.
