It’s knew that the Hungaroring is notorious for something special: this is a place where pole position is more important than at other venues. In the latest qualifying session we saw the frantic charge for the front row, which provided some thrilling action.
This time, Lewis Hamilton set the bar early in the final segment with the first time of the weekend under the 80 second mark – 1:19.978. Now this became the benchmark for others to aim at.
Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time in the final hour of practice in Hungary as he took his Red Bull around the tight and twisty circuit in 1:21.168. This best time was some three tenths quicker than Fernando Alonso who put the Ferrari in second spot.
Because at Hungaroring tyres are vital, some had pondered the option of just one effort in the qualifying shoot out.
Even so, all ten cars took to the track for a final effort. As expected, this was a super spectacle by the top ten runners that promised much. We had the chance to see the opening sector with Hamilton, Vettel and Jenson Button, who were all evenly matched. It was the middle sector that proved to be the turning point, for there Vettel managed to up the ante on Hamilton and pipped him to pole by one tenth of a second.
After a powerful effort, Jenson Button managed to secure third spot on the grid, just a further tenth down on his team mate. Surprisingly, Felipe Massa took fourth for Ferrari ahead of team mate Fernando Alonso.
For Red Bull team this wasn’t the best result, because Mark Webber finished the session a disappointed sixth. Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes and Adrian Sutil in the Force India followed him and Michael Schumacher came home ninth in the second Mercedes. And, at the bottom of top ten, was Sergio Perez, the Sauber team opting to save tyres and not send him out in the final ten minutes.
