2014 McLaren P1 ‘XP2R’ limited edition spied for the first time

Judging by these recently taken spy pictures, McLaren is already working on a limited edition version of its recently launched P1 supercar.

McLaren had unveiled the P1 model at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year and now they are testing what appears to be a special edition internally given a code name “XP2R”. This new variant is likely to be out somewhere in 2014 and will get a more catching nameplate.

The prototype was spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring tracks before pulling over at the nearby gas station for a refill. Behind the wheel was McLaren’s chief test driver Chris Goodwin. The sticker on the car stated “XP2R Prototype Vehicle” but that doesn’t reveal any details about the model and what will change.

This special edition will probably be able to get output closer to the 1,000 HP (735 kW) mark by uprating the twin-turbo V8 3.8-liter gasoline engine and also by tweaking the electric motor (Instant Power Assist System – IPAS) as compared to the standard P1 which has a combined output of 916 HP (674 kW).

Since it is expect to be a limited series, so we can expect probably five to ten units being produced, each priced at around 1 million GBP since the standard McLaren P1 comes with a price tag of 866,000 GBP.
