Mercedes-Benz continues to conduct tests for the extra-long S-Class as a prototype was spied undergoing some testing at the tracks of the Nürburgring.

The S-Class lineup is expected to receive a third member in 2014 when the “XL”, the name is not confirmed though, version will come out. It will be slotted above the existing long wheelbase version which has an overall length of 5246mm. The longer one will be around 5500mm in length and will keep the same layout of 2+2 seating.

While the third side windows of the short- and long-wheelbase versions are already included in the rear doors, on the XL model these are expected to be positioned after the rear doors as a result of the added wheelbase.

The company in fact has plans to add an even longer version sometime next year, the Maybach-replacing Pullman variant which will allegedly be almost six meters long and will have a seating arrangement of 2+2+2.

That’s not all, very soon the S-Class family will also see a CL-replacing coupe version which has already been previewed by a stunning concept, along with a convertible model as seen in some of the earlier spy pictures.
