2016 BMW 5-Series in the Works?

by SpeedLux

A British news channel, the CarMagazine, has unexpectedly reported that there is a huge probability the luxury German automaker, BMW, is currently prepping the upcoming BMW 5-Series models, which will have the codename of G30. According to the British news channel, there are two 5-Series variants that customers can expect to show up in the near future.

It is said that these next generation models of the BMW 5-Series will be based on the German company’s 35up platform, which is still quite new. The platform is slated for its debut on the BMW 7-Series models that are due out this year. The new platform is expected to significantly reduce the weight of the vehicle. This is all possible, thanks to the fact that the new platform takes advantage of the carbon fiber material combined with very strong steel and aluminum.

It is reported that the base trim of the next generation BMW 5-Series models will come in the form of the 518d. This trim will have a turbocharged 1.5L 3-cylinder diesel engine. The car is expected to be capable of 150 hp of power output at its peak performance.

Besides the base trim, BMW will reportedly launch an M5 variant as well. As you can easily guess, the CarMagazine reports that this variant will sit at the top of the range. It is expected to come with a 4.4L V8 engine with twin turbochargers. Its power output should easily achieve the mark of 600 hp. Power will be sent to the rear wheels as a standard configuration. Yet, BMW is also planning to offer customers with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, which will be the first time ever for a 5-Series model.

Besides the two variants mentioned above, some spy photos available out there on the web have also hinted that the German company may well be prepping another variant in the pipeline. In this case, it will most likely be a plug-in hybrid variant. If it is going to be similar to the BMW 3-Series plug-in hybrid model, customers can expect to receive more advanced sets of hardware on the vehicle. The upcoming BMW 5-Series models will reportedly come with three options, which are, estate, sedan and the GT version that is highly controversial.
