918 Spyder Hybrid from Porsche attracts 900 plus potential buyers prior to production green light

According to a report by Bloomberg News, there are 900 plus buyers trying to lineup for the hybrid 918 Spyder prototype of Porsche as the company is set to release its decision if it will go onto the production pipeline.

The development chief of the car company told media during the Beijing Auto Show that they might give production a go if the number of potential buyers hit at least 1,000. The top executives sees the successor of the Carrera GT as an excellent business case if the numbers continue to go up.

Porsche unwrapped the 918 Spyder during the auto show in Geneva last March and they aim to jack up their sales figures to 150,000 units for a mid-term goal.

The car manufacturer is also looking into the benefits of merging with Volkswagen AG. The two carmakers will be on the boardroom for the next six months to discuss strategies for their future range of vehicles.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is among the three hybrids unveiled by Porsche in Geneva. It is fitted with a V8 3.4L engine that has an output of 500 horsepower. This is in combo with an electric drivetrain which allows the car to go for 25 kilometers using purely electric power.

The fuel mileage of this two-seater is about three liters for every 100 kilometers with carbon dioxide emissions of 70 gram per kilometer. Porsche has China as its 3rd largest market after the United States and Germany. They expect to sell more than 10,000 vehicles this year which is a bit higher than their 2009 achievement of 9,900. A Porsche exec also mentioned the excellent prospects of the Cayenne SUV in the Chinese market. Porsche also disclosed that they have a ton of orders for the Panamera.
