It was 25 years ago that Ferrari had built their fastest car. This is a feat little known to many. It was an impressive feat to have been accomplished given the time and age of its happening.
The person that drove the car then was Steve Trafton and he drove the model which was a stock bodied 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO. The speed which he could achieve was a stupefying 275.4 mph and that too averaged over two trial runs.
It was not only the fastest Ferrari that the team then had produced but it was also the fastest sports car that was doing the rounds during that time. It had even been able to surpass the previous fastest car by 3 mph.
The surprising part was that the engine that was installed on the car at that time was a 288 GTO with 540 cubic-inches from General Motors V8. It also had some Borg Warner 80-mm turbos fitted to give that extra boost. No Italian engine was fitted then even though the car was of a 1985 288 GTO body.
The benchmark in speed that the car had established then that is 275.4 mph is yet to be surpassed.
