Alfa Romeo Spider in jeopardy, could become an Abarth or Fiat model instead – report

Alfa Romeo just can’t afford to catch a break as Automotive News is reporting that their planned Mazda MX-5 based roadster could instead go to Abarth or Fiat.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the same report is also stating that Sergio Marchionne’s decree that all Alfa Romeos be built in Italy will doom the brand’s chances for the roadster. This seems plausible as Mazda was scheduled to build both models in the plant at Hiroshima, Japan.

Well the good part is that the car is unlikely to be axed because walking away from the agreement with Mazda would likely prove too costly for Alfa Romeo and so they do not have any option as of now then to go for the model. Therefore, the model is expected to become part of the Abarth or Fiat lineup.

Nothing is official as of now but one source also said that Abarth really makes sense for a lightweight, small displacement, high-output two-seat roadster, which perfectly fits the brand’s DNA.

We will have to wait and see for further updates regarding Alfa Romeo Spider and what would be the possible outcome.
