Tobias Moers, the CEO of the AMG division of Mercedes-Benz, has pointed out that the German company is set to rival another German automaker, Porsche, and its 918 Spyder. Moers mentions that AMG is prepping a direct rival to the 918 Spyder. Moers has revealed this during the 2015 North International Auto Show (NAIAS) event that is taking place in Detroit, US, this week.
As reported by the Motor Trend, the public and the media attending the Detroit automotive expo are actually interested in finding out whether or not Mercedes-Benz and AMG happen to be prepping a vehicle that will compete head to head with the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder trio. The answer that comes out of Moers’ mouth is that Mercedes and AMG aim to be at the same level as those other automakers in Germany that build highly capable sports car.
In addition to that, Moers also mentions that AMG is set at making race technology eventually legal for street use. Yet, when asked about AMG’s upcoming range topping model that will feature a pair of gullwing doors, Moers refuses to give away any details.
Nonetheless, the public choose to believe that AMG will actually launch a flagship vehicle model that gets its power from a 4.0L V8 engine with twin turbochargers. This engine is supposed to deliver 700 bhp of power, extendable to above 1,000 bhp, thanks to its pairing with two electric motors. The latter should be derived from the ones used on the SLS AMG Electric Drive model. The engine will most likely lie at the middle section of the vehicle and power will be sent to all wheels.
