Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel’s 1.2 billion euro (1.4 billion USD) electric-car push is an advantage to another industry looking for to benefit from the shift beyond gasoline: chipmakers including Germany’s Infineon Technologies AG.

The subsidy program, which begins in May with rebates for automobile purchasers and plans for 15,000 battery-charging stations, equates into about $300 countless chips by 2019, stated Guenther Hollfelder, an expert at Baader Bank AG. Infineon, which reports second-quarter profits Tuesday, is slated to win the majority of that, he stated.

“Nobody is better placed to gain from the e-car push than Infineon, because they’re amongst the leading for both vehicle in addition to power semiconductors,” Hollfelder told. STMicroelectronics NV is another recipient because of a broad power chip portfolio and strong ties with the vehicle market, in particular in its Italy and France, he stated.

Automakers from mass-market PSA Peugeot Citroen to high end Daimler AG have promised to challenge Tesla Motors Inc. in electrical automobiles and are set to get a boost as Merkel’s program decreases the cost of automobiles for the consumer. That’s welcome news for chipmakers looking for fresh income streams as demand for semiconductors utilized in smartphones and tablets slows.

The benefits shall be the citizens of Germany, the European continent and the planet in general. Air pollution kills more people than traffic crashes at a global scale. The 1.4 billion is a start but more is needed from all nations.
