BMW asked to stop “misleading” ad on its ActiveE electric car

The ad presented by BMW regarding its Concept ActiveE has zero percent emissions have been termed as misleading by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

The debatable or objectionable phrase in the ad campaign is the one that states the car as offering “electrifying performance and zero CO2 emissions when driving”. ASA has ruled that this violated the norms laid down for advertisement and asked BMW to withdraw this advert. BMW contends that there is no tailpipe emissions from the car as such being a completely electricity driven car. However there is the need to recharge the battery for which the national grid is used and it is there that the use of fossil fuels comes into the picture. The ASA has even issued fresh guidelines for all car makers to ensure it is only fair and justified information that is delivered through their ads.
