BMW recalls 1 Series and stops production

by Sebastian Bivin

The affected BMWs don’t have enough clearance between the seat belt tensioners in the B-pillar and the insulating material surrounding it. In a crash, the insulation could become overheated and catch fire.

BMW called dealers to stop delivery of 1 series models produced between January-May 2010, until they perform a recall. BMW has a quick resolution and advises the repairs can begin ASAP on dealer inventory. Certain 2008-2011 1 Series coupes and convertibles are also affected.

Owners will be notified to bring their vehicle to BMW dealers to fix the problem. Dealers will trim the insulating material around the seat belt retractors free of charge.

If you have this issue, you can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
