BMW Shows Off Water Injection System at Geneva

If you remember correctly, long before the 2015 Geneva Motor Show even started, we told you that the luxury German marquee, BMW, was working on the M4 Coupe MotoGP safety car. We also told you that the car would be featuring a water injection system. Well, now, both the car and its water injection system have eventually arrived at one of the biggest auto expos of the year, held in Geneva.

According to the German automaker in question, it is not going to be long before the water injection system eventually makes appearance on mass production cars. The system is designed to inject fine spray of water into the provided collector. This, in turn, will result in an engine combustion process that is more efficient than what is offered by the conventional method. In addition to that, the new water injection system is also going to reduce the engine’s tendency to knock. As a result, the engine combustion temperature will become lower as well.

BMW also claims that this system improves the overall performance of the vehicle. This is possible because cool air is normally pretty dense and it boosts the concentration of oxygen contained within the engine combustion chamber. The Bavarian-based company also reveals that the water for the injection system is kept in an anti-frost tank with a 5.0L capacity. The tank resides inside the trunk of the vehicle and so do the valves, sensors and the water pump itself.

Speaking of the water injection system that is currently being exhibited on the BMW M4 Coupe MotoGP safety car, chances are, the luxury German automaker will be applying it onto its upcoming mass production M4 model. The official moniker remains unknown so far but some are referring to the vehicle in question as the BMW M4 GTS. The car will allegedly make its debut within approximately one year from now.
