A BMW representative has recently stated that all of the company’s models will receive some type of electrification very soon in order to meet more stringent emissions regulations.
In an interview given to one of the auto magazines, BMW’s board member for development Herbert Diess said that all models will have to be sold with some form of electrification, whether it will be hybrid or EV, even if some customers will not want these models. Most of BMW’s upcoming electric technology will be implemented on their European models as the emissions regulations are quite strict as compared to other places in the world.
Diess further stated that BMW’s main target was to meet the fleet average CO2 emissions of 95 g/km by the year 2020 in Europe but at the same time also deliver real driving pleasure. He recognized that the only way the company will be able to lower the CO2 average will be to offer a high percentage of electric cars. He concluded the interview by saying that electrification will be a central thread in what BMW does, be it plug-in hybrid, hybrid or full electrification.
