Ford F-250 is reported to be most popular vehicle among thieves

A report from Highway Loss Data Institute has rated the Ford F-250 as the most popular vehicle among the thieves.

Since 2003, the Cadillac Escalade has topped the list but now this time it has been dethroned by the Ford F-250. The survey is based on data gathered between 2010 and 2012 and does not distinguish theft of vehicle parts or contents from theft of the entire vehicle.

The F-250 four-wheel drive crew cab has a claim frequency of 7 per 1,000 vehicles insured, which results in an average loss payment per claim of 7,060 USD. The Escalade has in fact dropped to sixth place with a claim frequency of 5.5 per 1,000 vehicles. There are mainly two reasons of this change; one is the security features introduced in late 2011, while the other is related to declining sales.

Next to F-250 are the pickup trucks and SUVs which continue to be big attraction for thieves. Next to F-250 are the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 and the Ford F-350. After the Escalade we find the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe.

At the bottom of the list with the lowest theft claims are the Dodge Journey (4WD), Volkswagen Tiguan (4WD), Audi A4 sedan, Acura RDX, Toyota Matrix and the Lexus HS 250h.
