According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), who started an investigation, the Italian luxury brand, Maserati is recalling both its GranTurismo grand touring car and the four door Quattroporte for a tie-rod issue.
Certain 2009 model year cars that were manufactured between July 3, 2008 and September 30, 2008 are affected by this recall. A failure of the rear tie-rod due to poor machine work could greatly increase the chance of a crash.
The recall notice states that the GranTurismo and Quattroporte’s “REAR SUSPENSION LEFT-SIDE AND RIGHT-SIDE WHEEL ALIGNMENT TOE-IN TIE- RODS MAY FAIL DUE TO INCORRECT MACHINING,” so these can wear prematurely and weaken, causing the rear suspension on a vehicle that will obviously get driven fast to not work properly.
As you know already, these models produce massive amounts of power and torque to the rear wheels and a defective suspension is the last thing a driver of a Maserati wants. As a solution, the Italian car maker’s dealerships will remedy the issue free of charge and a tie-rod kit will be installed alongside a full, four wheel alignment.
