McLaren plans to replace windscreen wipers with jet fighter-derived technology

McLaren has recently announced that it is working on a technology that will eventually replace windscreen wipers.

In an interview given to The Sunday Times McLaren’s chief designer Frank Stephenson hinted that future McLaren models will have an ultrasonic transducer on the windscreen which will send 30 kHz waves of ultrasound across the glass surface to remove all types of debris and keep it clean. This procedure will be done instantly and will remove just about any type of debris, from water and mud to insects and snow.

We cannot say that it is a ground-breaking technology as a similar system is already available on jet fighters but the good thing about this technology is that it would be applied for the first time on cars. Not only will it help to greatly improve visibility, but Stephenson says that fuel economy will also be bettered as a result of erasing the weight of the wiper motors.

That’s not all, due to less drag the car will also have a better aerodynamic efficiency and will be able to eliminate the annoying task of having to remove the ice from the windshield in severe cold climates.
