by SpeedLux

The Opel Astra is now available with a new engine which is a 1.6-liter SIDI Turbo gasoline engine. This new engine is available for the five-door hatchback model, four-door sedan and Sports Tourer versions of the Astra.

The new engine can produce 170 HP (125 kW) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque and is a replacement for the old 1.6 Turbo engine. The new engine provides an extra 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) compared to its predecessor, while torque availability has reduced from 2,200 rpm to just 1,650 rpm.

The engine has better fuel management which means that it consumes 14 percent less than the previous engine, being capable to have a NEDC fuel consumption of 5.9 liters / 100 km (39.9 mpg US or 47.9 mpg UK) for the hatchback and sedan versions.

The engine is well connected to a new six-speed manual transmission gearbox or an optional low-friction six-speed automatic transmission gearbox with Active Select Function to enable manual shifting. The new 1.6 SIDI Turbo-equipped Astra hatchback starts with a base price of EUR 23,385, followed by the Sports Tourer for EUR 24,485.
