A new convertible from Opel is in the offing in 2013. This news was given out by the maker of the car themselves. Last year the company had announced an eleven billion euro dollar plan and this convertible to be is part of that project along with a new Zafira as well as Ampera EV model. The design of the droptop convertible would be based on the current Astra hatchback, Astra Tourer and the Astra GTC which is also an upcoming item and which have a compact architecture from General Motor. The design would also have the flavor of the Cruze by Chevrolet and the Orlando.
Next generation Astra Convertible is the expected name to be given to the model, although this is not confirmed by the company. Current name of the project is Astra TwinTop. Production of the car would commence at Opel’s Gliwice plant in Poland in 2013. This plant has other Opel Astra models also under manufacturing process.
Nick Reilly, CEO Opel/Vauxhall says, “The new Convertible will be a great addition to our product lineup. It follows the long-standing tradition of highly emotional and legendary Opel/Vauxhall Cabrios that provided important halo effects on our brand. With its sleek and elegant design, our new Convertible will fully deliver on that same promise.”
There are chances that the design of the Astra Convertible may be a soft top rather than a hard top as this would give it a competing feature against the new VW Golf Cabriolet model. More details would be had at the time of launch of the car.
