Renault unveils their new Energy F1 engine

Renault has recently unveiled their new Energy F1 engine at the Paris Air Show.

The 1.6-liter V6 engine which is designed to comply with Formula One’s new regulations is equipped with direct injection, an exhaust-driven turbocharger and two motor generator units (MGUs).

The MGU-K is connected to the engine’s crankshaft and is capable of generating power of 160 hp (120 kW) or generating electricity under braking. The MGU-H, on the other hand, is connected to the turbocharger and generates electricity as well as controls the speed of the turbocharger.

Since the turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 generates an output of around 600 hp (447 kW), the engine’s combined maximum output would be now roughly 760 hp (566 kW). It is also more fuel efficient than the previous RS27 engine as the cars will only be permitted to use 100 kg (220 lbs) of fuel for each race.

The engine is in the final stages of testing and Renault expects to install them into F1 cars early next year in preparations for the first race to be held in March next year.
