Plans to unveil a successor to the X-Type sometime around 2012 were already announced by Jaguar earlier. With the new X-Type, the British carmaker expects to take on the BMW 3-Series. Jaguar also revealed the up-coming car would be built to be placed under the current XF series.

The 2012 X-Type, it is believed by experts, will feature an avant-garde blueprint that would be the same as seen in XF and XJ models. The only difference however, would be that the 2012 X-Type shall have much smoother curves.

The distinguishing factor in the 2012 model year X-Type super sports car would be the XF’s rectangular mesh grille up-front along with swept back headlights. The sports sedan would also get boomerang tail-lamps and pronounced curves over the wheel arches at the rear. If we were to go by rumors it is believed that the next the new model year 2012 X-Type will be built on an all new aluminum rear wheel drive platform. If it so happens, then its going to significantly improve fuel economy in the luxury sedan.

Among the non visible changes in Jaguar’s 2012 X-Type, it is believed, would consist of a pair of downsized four cylinder engines. It would have either diesel or petrol turbo units. Jaguar is also likely to be turning up a 3.0 liter V6 turbo-diesel and a hybrid version as well consisting of a V6 diesel engine in conjunction with a 47 HP electric motor. The engine would be attached with an integrated eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
