Two people were killed after a head-on crash on Highway 26 on the Warm Springs Reservation Saturday.

It closed the highway for hours.

The crash took place around 1:30 p.m. near milepost 77 when a Ford Taurus headed eastbound ended up in the westbound lane and crashed with a Hyundai car.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 63-year-old identified as Carla Nichols of Redmond, and the driver of the Taurus, a 51-year-old identified as James Mahon of Mineral Wells, Texas, were both killed in the crash.

A young chihuahua that was in Nichols’ vehicle survived the crash.

The highway was closed just east of the Highway 216 junction for about four hours.

Oregon State Police investigated the crash.
