Volkswagen E-Bugster Concept – Photos and Info

Volkswagen presented the E-Bugster at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show. The Beetle runs on a central electric power module which weighs only 900kg. The power is stored in a lithium-ion battery. Thanks to this battery, the E-Bugster’s range is 110 miles in the city, which is more than enough for anyone to drive to and back from work. This car accelerates from 0 to 60 in 10.9 seconds, and doesn’t produce any CO2. The battery can be refilled within 35 minutes at suitable charging stations. It can also be recharged at home, but it takes a little longer. Volkswagen developed this battery in cooperation with Audi, Daimler, BMW, Porsche, Ford and Opel. The recharging can be done by using AC current, or DC current at charging stations, which is a lot faster).

The battery also recharges as soon as the driver takes his foot of the throttle, by transforming the kinetic energy into electric current. Volkswagen estimates that the technology found in this concept will be available in vehicles like the Golf as early as 2013.

The high tech equipment from under the hood can be seen inside the car as well – especially when the driver hits the start button, when a light show is put into motion.

The E-Bugster is a concept which may not be that far ahead into the future.
