Volkswagen drops the 2.5-liter five-cylinder in the US, relegates the Routan to fleet status

Volkswagen of America has recently announced a series of changes to their 2014 lineup.

To start with, the antiquated 2.5-liter five cylinder engine that produced 170 hp (127 kW) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) of torque would now be replaced by a new turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that generates 170 hp (127 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. It promises to deliver significant highway fuel mileage gains over the 2.5-liter unit.

The company also has announced its plans to offer VW Car-Net connected services on the models such as Beetle, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat and Tiguan. The OnStar-like service has a variety of safety features that includes stolen vehicle location assistance and crash notifications, to name a few.

Other notable changes announced include the Routan being relegated to fleet status and the announcement that all US-spec Jettas will come fitted with a multilink rear suspension.

Last but not the least, Volkswagen also announced that the Beetle Convertible R-Line, Touareg R-Line and Tiguan R-Line will go on sale this fall.
