Volkswagen e-up! to price 2.5 times more than the standard model

The Volkswagen up! was considered to be designed to be affordable and fuel-efficient model but that seems to have changed with conversion to an electric vehicle.

Set to be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the e-up! will cost nothing less than a bomb as Volkswagen has confirmed it would start from €26,900 (approx. $34,525 / £23,150) with a battery. Just for comparison, the larger Nissan Leaf starts at €23,790 (approx. $30,520 / £20,515) with a leased battery or €29,690 (approx. $38,105 / £25,605) if the battery is purchased.

The hefty price tag is for the electric powertrain that generates a peak output of 82 HP (60 kW) and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the hatchback to accelerate from 0-100 kmph (0-62 mph) in 12.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 130 kmph (81 mph). Moreover, it can travel up to 160 km (99 miles) on a single charge. Not to forget, the e-up! has “zero CO2 emissions” and only costs about €3 ($4 / £2) to travel 100 kilometers (62 miles).
