Volkswagen Golf plug-in hybrid to receive GTE moniker – report

A latest report indicates that Volkswagen will start selling a plug-in hybrid version of the Golf with the “GTE” designation later this year.

It will essentially be Volkswagen’s variant of the Audi A3 e-tron so we can expect to see a 1.4-liter TFSI working together with an electric motor, a six-speed dual-clutch e-S tronic gearbox and a 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The conventional engine will be able to produce 150 HP (110 kW) while the electric motor is going to generate 102 HP (75 kW) which will enable the Golf GTE to have a combined output of 204 HP (150 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

This hardware arrangement will allow the model to have a fuel economy of 156.5 mpg US (188 mpg UK or 1.5 liters / 100 km) with corresponding CO2 emissions will be just 35 g/km. In electric mode it will be able to cover a distance of up to 31 miles (50 km) and should be able to touch a top speed of 81 mph (130 kmph). When used as a plug-in hybrid, the Golf GTE will be able to accelerate to 0-62 mph (0-100 kmph) in 7.6 seconds.
