Only recently, Volkswagen introduced a brand new city car built in Europe. It’s called the Up!, and we would opine that it was instant hit, based on the quantity sold on the streets.

The car’s status is found in the efficient engines it offers, two petrol and one diesel, replacing the 1 liter. Even though it doesn’t use the new MQB platform, it shares its steering and engines are copied from the MQB range.

But there’s always a chance for improvement, and the Up! is likely to receive its first hybrid engine in a few years time. The engine will first be tested in the limited production XL1, but within the next couple of months it will be installed in the UP! as well.

The engine in particular is a 0.8-liter TDI with only two cylinders and 47 horsepower, basically half of 1.6 TDI. It’s supported by a 27 horsepower electric motor as well as 5.5 kWh battery.

The Up! with a 1-litre engine weighs 940 kilograms, but with the electric motor and bigger battery also it will still weigh less than a ton, In complete electric style it is likely to have a range of 30 miles (50 km).
